1000 Cups of Cranes Exhibition
A year long community inclusion project by Naomi from Wonkie Knee Art involving 1000 cups of coffee, 1000 photos, 2000 origami cranes, 2 origami artworks and ceramic art coffee cups.
The exhibition is an exploration of everyday items using origami, photography and ceramics. Naomi's photos are fascinating images of origami cranes coupled with everyday objects to create interesting stories. These stories inspire coffee cups, folded from clay slabs, decorated using textures and vibrant colours, introducing texture and colour to the everyday experience of drinking a cup of coffee. As part of this project, community members, decorated squares of paper that were then folded into some of the 2000 cranes. Culminating in two large origami artworks, the major Artwork contains 1000 cranes resting on a plain white background. Cranes spiral out from the centre in a montage of colour. The second artwork contains a repeated image of a black crane on small numbered squares with a folded crane attached. Members of the public that received these small cranes, throughout the year, will add them to the artwork during the exhibition creating an interactive community project.
Colouring in the squares by members of the community encourages them to participate even when they feel they have no artistic talent. And those squares created the most unique and special cranes.
Because of their interaction, their artwork has become a part of my artwork and together we have bonded and are creating something special for us to remember that will live in our hearts and our memories of that time when we shared a cup of coffee and a crane.
Future interactive projects are anticipated along with art and clay classes and origami workshops which are already happening.
